Emotrics
Emotrics is about measuring, analyzing, and tuning the human system. The individual human has interacting body parts, brain parts, not to mention dreams, needs and relationships that often conflict. Through interaction these parts form complex systems that grow and adjust following rhythmic patterns that sometimes run smoothly, and at other times fall apart. We often are unaware of how we sustain or recreate rhythms of healthy eating, sleeping, thought, emotional or spiritual connection, until they fail and we find ourselves trapped in unhealthy cycles.
By increasing awareness and training greater control of some of these unconscious processes, we increase our ability to deal with the inevitable stresses of life more flexibly and with greater equanimity. This website hopes to make information available about strategies, tactics and tools for increasing our understanding and practice of the techniques that can help us learn and better manage our complex selves.
This site is organized as follows:
- Physiology - what we know about different brain/body systems and how they operate
- Measures - different measures of the status or interactions of different brain/body systems. This includes brainwave measures, neurotransmitter measures, behavioral measures.
- Tools - different hardware and software tools that have been found to be useful for measuring, tracking, or analyzing brain/body measures. This includes EEG, thermometers, thermistors, mobile apps.
- Protocols - defined practice patterns that people have proposed or implemented in an attempt to create a new pattern of operation in a physiologic system. This includes biofeedback, neurofeedback, cognitive-behavioral training, motivational interviewing.
- People - people, labs, organizations involved in studying, extending and creating the theories, measures, tools and practices described above. This includes my goals, as well as other researchers, equipment manufacturers.
